Each year, thousands of children are injured in window falls. Many of these incidents happen at home during everyday moments, when caregivers are nearby.
Pierce County accounts for about 25% of all pediatric window fall hospitalizations at MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s. Within our fire district, some neighborhoods experience these injuries more often than others.
The good news is these falls are preventable.
Central Pierce Fire & Rescue is partnering with Mary Bridge Children’s to raise awareness, share simple safety steps, and provide free window stops to families who need them.

“Did you know nearly 5,000 children fall from windows each year?
Young children are naturally curious and top-heavy, which makes them more likely to fall through a window opening greater than four inches.
Simple steps can help prevent these injuries:
- Install window stops that limit openings to four inches or less
- Keep furniture away from windows
- Open windows from the top, when possible
- Teach children to stay at least two steps away from windows, but don’t rely on rules alone
- Share window safety practices with babysitters, grandparents, and other caregivers

MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s treats about 33 children each year for injuries from window falls, and many come from right here in our community.

Madden’s parents were just outside when she leaned against a window screen. It gave away, and her recovery took months.
